In Canvas, a blank grade (a dash “-“) does not count as a zero. It completely ignores that assignment. If your professor enters a “0” at the end of the semester, your grade will drop!
Weighted vs. Points
If your syllabus uses a “Points” system instead of weights, simply add up all your earned points and divide by the total possible points. If it uses Percentages (e.g., Exams 50%), you must use this calculator.

The Mathematical Formulas

Current Weighted Grade:
Overall = Σ (Category Grade × Category Weight) ÷ Total Weight Entered

Final Exam Target Score:
Required = [ Desired – (Current × (100 – Final Weight) ÷ 100) ] ÷ (Final Weight ÷ 100)

Whether you are staring down midterms or panicking during finals week, trying to figure out your actual class grade can be incredibly stressful. If your professor uses a “Weighted” syllabus (for example, Exams are worth 50%, while Homework is only 20%), simple addition will not work.

To make matters worse, the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) is notorious for displaying misleading “Current Grade” totals if your professor hasn’t manually entered zeroes for missing assignments.

Our free Canvas Grade Calculator takes the panic out of finals week. We built two distinct, highly accurate tools into one:

  1. Current Class Grade: Input your syllabus categories to find your exact weighted percentage, even if the semester isn’t over yet.
  2. Final Exam Target: Instantly calculate exactly what score you need to get on your final exam to pass the class with an A, B, or C!

How to Use the Canvas Grade Calculator

If your class is heavily weighted toward exams, scoring a 100% on a tiny homework assignment barely moves the needle. Here is how to find out where you actually stand using our two calculator modes:

Part 1: Finding Your Current Weighted Grade

  1. Check Your Syllabus: Open your class syllabus and find the grading breakdown (e.g., Quizzes: 20%, Essays: 40%, Participation: 10%).
  2. Find Your Category Averages: Look at your Canvas Gradebook and find your current average for each specific category.
  3. Enter the Data: Type the Category Name, your current Grade (%), and the total Weight (%) into the calculator. You can click “Add Another Category” to generate up to 8 rows.
  4. Calculate: The tool will automatically calculate your total current grade and assign a standard letter grade.

Part 2: Finding Your Final Exam Target

Once you know your current grade, click the Final Exam Target tab at the top of the calculator.

  1. Enter Current Grade: Input your current overall class percentage.
  2. Enter Desired Grade: What is your ultimate goal? If you want an A-, type 90. If you just want to pass, type 70.
  3. Enter Final Exam Weight: Check your syllabus and enter exactly how much the final exam is worth overall (e.g., 20%).
  4. Calculate: The tool will tell you the exact percentage you need to score on the test. Warning: If the result is over 100%, it means it is mathematically impossible to reach your desired grade without extra credit!

The Grade Formulas

Calculating a weighted grade by hand requires multiplying every single category grade by its specific weight, adding those results together, and dividing by the total weight entered so far. Here is the exact math our calculator uses:

Current Weighted Grade Formula:

Overall Grade = [ Σ (Category Grade × Category Weight) ] ÷ Total Weight Entered

Final Exam Target Formula:

Required Score = [ Desired Grade – (Current Grade × (100 – Final Weight) ÷ 100) ] ÷ (Final Weight ÷ 100)

Surviving Finals Week

Let’s look at a real-world example. Meet Sarah. She is taking a Biology class and wants to know what she needs on her Final Exam to get an 80% (a B-) in the class.

First, she looks at her syllabus and enters her current category averages into the calculator:

  • Homework (20% Weight): She has a 95%
  • Labs (30% Weight): She has an 85%
  • Midterm Exam (20% Weight): She has a 72%

The calculator multiplies each grade by its weight (95 × 20 = 1900), adds them together (5890), and divides by the 70% total weight she has completed so far. Sarah’s current working grade is an 84.14%.

Now, she clicks over to the Final Exam Target tab.

  • She enters her current grade: 84.14%
  • She enters her desired grade: 80.0%
  • She enters the weight of the upcoming Final Exam: 30%

The calculator instantly reveals that Sarah only needs to score a 70.34% on her Final Exam to keep her B- in the class! She can breathe a sigh of relief.

Weighted Grading vs. Point-Based Grading

Before using this calculator, it is critical to check your syllabus to see how your professor grades the class.

Weighted Grading (Use this Calculator):

In a weighted system, categories matter more than individual points. A 10-point quiz in a category worth 40% of your grade will impact your final score drastically more than a 100-point worksheet in a category worth 5% of your grade. You must use a weighted calculator to find your true average.

Point-Based Grading (Do not use this Calculator):

In a points-based system, every point is equal. A point earned on a quiz is the same as a point earned on an essay. To calculate your grade in this system, simply add up all the total points you have earned, divide them by the total possible points in the class, and multiply by 100.

Standard College GPA Scale

If you are trying to figure out your “Desired Grade” for the Final Exam calculator, use this standard US College grading scale as a reference. (Note: Always check your specific university’s grading policy, as some schools do not award A+ or C- grades).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why is my Canvas grade higher than my actual grade?

This is the most dangerous trap students fall into! By default, Canvas ignores “unsubmitted” assignments. If you missed three massive homework assignments but your professor hasn’t manually typed a “0” into the gradebook yet, Canvas treats them as if they don’t exist, artificially inflating your grade. Always assume unsubmitted work is a zero, and manually factor it into your category averages!

What does “Unassigned Weight” mean on the results page?

If your syllabus categories add up to 100%, but you only entered grades for Quizzes (20%) and Homework (30%), the calculator will tell you that you have 50% “Unassigned Weight.” This simply means that half of your entire semester’s grade is still undecided!

How is this different from the Canvas “What-If” scores?

Canvas allows you to type “What-If” scores into individual assignments to see how your grade changes. However, if your professor hasn’t created the Final Exam assignment in the system yet, you can’t use that feature. Our calculator allows you to bypass the Canvas system entirely and figure out your required target score instantly.

Does this calculator work for Blackboard or Google Classroom?

Yes! While we built this tool with Canvas quirks in mind, the mathematics of weighted grading are universal. You can use this tool to calculate your grade for Blackboard, Moodle, Google Classroom, or any other university learning management system.

How do I calculate extra credit?

Extra credit in a weighted system can be tricky. If your professor adds extra credit directly to a specific assignment (like scoring 105/100 on a test), simply enter your resulting category average as normal (even if it is over 100%). If your professor adds a flat percentage to your final overall grade at the end of the year, do not include it in the calculator, just subtract it from your “Desired Grade” target instead!
